Rabbit killer blames ice for crime

A Sydney financier who successfully appealed against a conviction for mutilating and killing 17 rabbits says he is now drug-free and eager to return to work.

New Zealand-born Brendan Francis McMahon, 37, last week appealed his conviction of 18 counts of animal cruelty on the grounds of mental illness.

He said his mental disorder - which has been described as extreme social anxiety - was aggravated by heavy drug use before and during his offence.

NSW District Court Judge Peter Berman dismissed McMahon's application for costs and said there were no exceptional circumstances in the matter.

Outside Sydney's Downing Centre District Court, McMahon blamed those who had supplied him with the drug, ice, for what had happened and said he was still receiving treatment for drugs.

"Anybody who hands somebody an ice pipe and offers them the drug is not a friend of that person," McMahon said.

"I've established a drug-free life, I've got married and now I'm going to get on with the rest of my life."

He said his friends and family had stuck by him throughout the court hearings.

"You don't lose good friends," he said.

Psychiatrist Stephen Allnutt earlier told the appeal hearing that McMahon suffers from an underlying mental illness which was exacerbated by his drug use.

Judge Berman found Mr McMahon could not be held responsible for his actions given his mental disorder.

The court was previously told McMahon was smoking $250 worth of ice, or crystal methamphetamine, every three days before he used his company credit card to purchase animals before torturing them to death and dumping their corpses in and around his inner city office building.

"When you experience psychosis and then you come out of psychosis you don't really remember much at all, so it was like it never happened or it happened to another, a different person," Mr McMahon said outside the court.

"So ... it's hard to feel a lot of the types of feelings you'd think that you would have, but that's what psychosis is."

He said he was relieved to be acquitted of the charges.

"I think the justice system finally worked it through and the law was applied by more learned men than perhaps in the local court," he said.

A former cocaine and cannabis user, McMahon said his recreational use of ice became "very regular" after only two to three months.

"I think I was burned out and self-medicating and had experienced different drugs before but never became addicted," he said.

Mr McMahon said there should be more government programs to help ice addicts.

"It always surprised me that you could get ice pipes in tobacconists and the state government collects GST on those and they're all imported from China which is where most of this comes from.

"If you use ice, you'll either end up in a mental institution, or in jail, or dead.

"Ice is a problem that the government can fix."

hahahaha heres another story where some wack job gets on drugs & blames his mates & the drug.

Look at the bigger picture.

this guy is a nut job.. he killed rabbits & blamed that on ice.

I mean ive had thoughts of killing ppl & what not while on ice & after it but i never went & did it.

You cant even compare ice and heroin, why on earth would an ice user want to touch heroin if they love being stimulated? hello, smack is a downer. they're 2 completly different substances. fuk the addictiveness to them. it has no relevance.

no - have u come across 1 person in the rave scene that thinks heroin is acceptable ?? therefore 90% of people who use ice would not use heroin

I am not talking what the drug does - its more the stigma, etc. that surrounds it - everyone thinks heroin and junkies are so bad and say "I'd never touch that" fuk even personally thats what I think but at the same time same people have no problems smokign ice - my point is ice is more destructive and more addictive than heroin BUT bcoz its a "party" drug and techincally an upper people dont think that its bad therefore u normally person eg U and I try it whereas U and I would not touch heroin AND thats how u end up with sooo many lost khunts getting locked in padded cells at hospitals on weekends - I hope u see what I am saying

Its the sleep deprevation which makes you paranoid not the actual drug.

why is everything always about drugs? this is the reason i stay the fuck away from this scene & the people in it. It can fuck right off in my opinion, EVERYONES on something.

No one here is looking at the big picture.

If you watch ANY ice doccos, they outline that the HARDEST users of ice are EX or still HEROIN addicts. After the heroin shortage and quality drop since the early 00's, stimulants like ice surged in popularity, ice is WIDESPREAD thru all social demographics, not just ravers or junkies. Its rife with the rich and famous as well.

Given the fact that it hasnt had bad publicity until recently, and it doesn't carry the 'you have to use a needle to use this drug' stigma it's also alot more widespread.

Ice is fucked, and you're a fuckwit if you are wasting your money on it.

I hear the same shit from kids all the time "i use speed, but i wont do ice" fuckn morons, its the same fuckn chemical you're smoking in that pipe whats the fuckn dif? the taste and form of the drug, adn the shit its cut with. thats all. It's all methamphetamine.

LMAO i saw a b-grade horror flick at the vid shop the other day, it was called "Ice queen", it was about some crazy lookin hag that had a fucked up face that came from the stone age and was frozen in a large shard of ice. lol. I just giggled as i read the blurb and looked at the picture of the evil hag, i know so many girls like that.

mike: its not just sleep deprivation, i had a friend who had Schizophrenia (thats how you spell it right? lol.. a word i cant spell), anyway, when she'd do crystal instant headfuck - she'd go into this warped psychotic state, believe she was a vampire and all kinds of deranged shit (occasionally this would come on without drugs) and only as the night wore on, say 5-7 hours later would she come into a semi-paranoid but together state and she'd be hearing voices and just scared - and wanted someone to help her. Was really fucked up and scary. Ice use is worse with these people because they dont understand why they like the drug, and have no idea whats goin on in the time that they hit psychosis to when they just reach the paranoia stage. In those people the paranoia is alot easier to cope with when your the 3rd party (ie: them. their mind and you)
