Decriminalise drunkenness: inquiry

VICTORIA'S laws should be changed to decriminalise public drunkenness, a parliamentary inquiry recommends.

State parliament's all party Drugs and Crime Prevention Committee has conducted an inquiry into strategies to reduce harmful alcohol consumption.
Its final report makes 165 recommendations, including that public drunkenness be decriminalised.

Victoria is the only state in Australia where being drunk in a public place is a criminal offence and carries a $100 fine.

The report also calls on the state government to establish a government office of Alcohol Policy and Coordination.

The office should take on a range of tasks including fostering on-going public input into alcohol policy, disseminating information about alcohol use and abuse, and developing and coordinating training programs on alcohol.

The report also recommends Food Standards Australia consider standardising wine glasses so consumers know how much they are drinking.

And undercover police should be used to catch businesses selling alcohol to underage drinkers in the same way they are used to catch retailers selling cigarettes to children.

The committee conducted 102 public hearings and meetings, receiving 74 written submissions.

It found "cultural change is a central element in achieving a real and lasting reduction in harmful alcohol consumption".

What act is there to clean up! If you can purchase alcohol then ppl will drink it and...........get drunk from time to time. Demonising it only leads to ppl abusing it like we've seen with every other GODDAMn substance that ppl hit up for the same reason.

Going back to the 1920's isnt the solution and it's about time the government took their HEAD out of their ASS and look at this in a mature away. It's not going to go away DEAL WITH IT and while you're at it get smart and realise that the same approach will be beneficial to everything else ppl use to get up on!

i didnt realise u could get a fine for stumbiling out of a club or even walking home from one drunk would get u a fine thats fuct i think that there gettin to pettyhonestly if i was a g head and i blew out or a junkie od'n i get ambulance hospital for free and stealin it from someone who actually may need it yet ill get a a fine for being drunbkin public!!! its a crock i think
