'More than a million' have used methamphetamines

An estimated 1.5 million Australians have snorted, smoked, injected or otherwise imbibed methamphetamines, according to the first major national report on the drug.

Highly refined methamphetamine, known as "ice", is currently the most high-profile and easily available type of methamphetamine in Australia.

The Australian National Council on Drugs (ANCD) report estimates that around 500,000 Australians have used methamphetamines, including ice, in the past year alone.




By comparison, a 2004 study found roughly three times that many people had used cannabis over a 12-month period.

The report says there are around 73,000 dependent methamphetamine users in Australia, compared to 45,000 regular heroin users. Regular methamphetamine users are 11 times more likely to experience psychotic symptoms than non-users.

ANCD chairman John Herron said while use of methamphetamines had stabilised in the past few years, increasing numbers of dependent users were making the problem more visible.

He said methamphetamine users could be divided into a number of categories, including a "core group" that injected the drug several days a week.

"A further new group of ice users smoke the drug and often these people have little history of drug treatment or drug-related arrests, but are more likely to develop dependence on the drug," Mr Herron said.

"This dispels the belief amongst some methamphetamine users that by smoking the drug they are somehow in control of their drug use."

The report found that methamphetamine dependence was linked to high levels of crime, especially among those who spent more than $200 a week on the drug.

It identified Southeast and East Asia as the source of three-quarters of the world's methamphetamine supply, and recommended international co-operation to break down these crime rings.

Mr Herron said there were a number of strategies in place to deal with ice addiction and associated problems.

"The best form of response is what we do now and that means a balanced and co-ordinated response between supply reduction, education, treatment and harm reduction," he said.

$200 (or more) a week? Riight, so they're buying half a gram every week? You could smoke that in one night, unless they're rationing out 5 points throughout the week though i highly doubt it.

easily.. for someone on the dole or unemployed $200 a week is alot of money, so once they have smoked all their money how else are they gonna get more?

On the note of habits that cost $200 a week.. thats more like daily in the lives of most ice heads i know.. every day, tryin to score a half g at minimum. see them online.. when they are iced in their names say shit like "sunshine lollipops" on msn., then next day comes "I hate this world and this life"... wonder why that is..

the reason people were 'whinging' about G is because dumb fucks were getting carted away in ambulances at every party we went to! pretty simple really... might sound heartless, but i dont care what anyone does if its not in my face, sure i might think your a fuckwit, but i aint gonna go preaching to u that your fucking your brain! cos so do pills & acid & dope & booze!
